Why Chat Without a Phone Number?
Every messenger asks for your number. Plus One doesn’t — you pick a username and a password and you’re in. Here’s why that’s better, and honestly, what it costs.

Every messenger asks for your number. Plus One doesn’t — you pick a username and a password and you’re in. Here’s why that’s better, and honestly, what it costs.
A phone number is the most personal thing you can hand over — it’s tied to your SIM, your billing, your WhatsApp, your bank. And yet almost every messenger wants it, and most quietly upload your whole contact list while they’re at it. Plus One is built the other way: you pick a username and a password, and that’s the whole signup.
It’s a fair question, and there is a small cost. Instead of scanning your contacts, you share a username — the same way you’d say “add me on Instagram” or hand someone a handle. For communities and interest groups it actually works better: on the Communities tab you find rooms by what they’re about — travel, running, study groups, game nights — and join by a link or a join policy, not by syncing a phonebook.
The trade-offs are honest: username requires a little memorising, and you can’t find people purely by “they’re in my contacts”. In exchange you never hand over your number, and nobody’s phonebook is being slurped away in the background.
One username, one “One ID”, working everywhere. Sign in on the web app, on the Android APK, or in iOS via Expo Go, and your chats, communities and settings follow you. It’s the same account on every platform — just without the permission-greedy bits.
No phone number, no contact upload, no ads. Pick a username and start chatting on Plus One.
Yes. On Plus One you sign up with a username and a password. No phone number, no email wall, no contact-list upload — your contacts never leave your phone.
Most apps use a phone number as proof of a real, unique identity and to make finding friends easier. Plus One trades that convenience for privacy — you are your username, not your phone number.
By username. You share your username and type theirs to start a chat. It’s the same mental model as a handle on any platform.
There’s one trade: you have to remember a username instead of relying on a number. Everywhere else it’s simpler — no OTPs, no SMS costs, no “my account is my number” problem.
Yes. Free to sign up with a username and password, free to chat, no ads, no in-app purchases, no premium tier.
