Some chats are rooms; some chats are receipts. Disappearing messages are for the second kind — here’s what they do, and when they actually earn their keep.
Every message you’ve ever sent is, somewhere, still sitting around. Disappearing messages flip that default. You pick a timer — 30 seconds, 5 minutes, 1 hour, 24 hours — and when it runs out, the message is gone. Not hidden, not archived: gone.
There’s a difference between “deleted” and “gone”, and it matters. On some apps “disappearing” just hides the message on your screen — the copy is still on the server, and an uninstall/reinstall can bring it back. On Plus One, a timed message is hard-deleted from the server when the timer fires. That’s the version worth having.
And when it’s a bad idea? For the stuff you’ll want to re-read — a friend’s address for the fifth time, the joke that lives on, the reference someone sends you twice a year. Keep those permanent. Disappearing messages are a tool for noise, not for memories.
A disappearing message doesn’t stop a screenshot, and it doesn’t make a chat “secret” — it just means there’s less of a permanent trail. If you want the message unreadable in transit too, that’s what end-to-end encryption is for. For the everyday “please stop making my phone buzz” problem, a timer is the whole answer.
Set a disappearing timer per chat or per message, or mute a chat entirely. Free, on Android, iOS and web.
Messages that automatically delete after a set time — 30 seconds, 5 minutes, 1 hour or 24 hours. On Plus One they’re hard-deleted from the server, not just hidden on your screen.
They don’t make you anonymous, but they do mean the message is genuinely gone after the timer. On Plus One a disappearing message is removed from the server, so a fresh install or a backup sync won’t resurrect it.
Yes. You can set a disappearing timer for the whole chat, or send a single message that disappears. It’s per-chat or per-message, whichever suits the situation.
No. Disappearing messages are for logistics and fast-moving plans. Keep the memories, the jokes and the important stuff permanent — you’ll want them back.
A screenshot still works. Disappearing messages are about not leaving a permanent record on the device and the server — they don’t stop a screenshot. If you don’t want it recorded, don’t send it.
